So, what's up with tissue paper?

Tissue paper is produced on a paper machine that has a single large steam heated drying cylinder (yankee dryer) fitted with a hot air hood. The raw material is paper pulp. The yankee cylinder is sprayed with adhesives to make the paper stick. Creping is done by the yankee's doctor blade that is scraping the dry paper off the cylinder surface. The crinkle (crêping) is controlled by the strength of the adhesive, geometry of the doctor blade, speed difference between the yankee and final section of the paper machine and paper pulp characteristics.



The key properties of tissue paper are absorbency, thickness (caliper), bulk (specific volume), stretch, appearance and comfort. The properties are controlled by pulp quality, crêping and additives (both in base paper and as coating).



Hygienic tissue paper is commonly used for facial tissue (paper handkerchiefs), napkins, bathroom tissue and household towels. Paper has been used for hygiene purposes for centuries, but tissue paper as we know it today was not produced in the United States before the mid-1940s. In Western Europe large scale industrial production started in the beginning of 1960s.

A reengineering of the tissue paper manufacturing process has allowed us to achieve an energetic consumption of 2,100 kWh/t and a water consumption of 2.5 m3/t, a numbers that are unheard of in the tissue sector.


The new concept of linear manufacturing, where everything happens in real time, allows the development of new products and, at the same time, lets us produce custom-made​​ orders. This is the background behind the OnePly® tissue paper, a monolayer product which reduces the need for raw materials, energy and water. We continue to develop technology in the tissue manufacturing sector to meet the needs of today's customers and society and create environmentally sustainable products. Every product that leaves our factory is certified with the Ecolabel and PSFC environmental policies.

We invented the OnePly® tissue paper

OnePly® is designed with one single ply, unlike conventional tissue papers with two or three layers. Since the minimum weight established for this product is above 30 g/m2, it ensures that there no free spaces between fibres , reaching a good internal capillary. The intense creping operation, increases the height of the wave with a high frequency, achieving a product with excellent absorption capacity and softness. The bulk desired can be easily achieved with a proper embossing process.



With this design, the tissue paper used for the Away from Home markets has reasonable transportation costs. Its lower energy consumption level, labels this product with low CO2 emissions as well as a product with a lower price. The final result is a paper with more absorption per gram than the TAD, smoother, and with a better price. In addition to this, it has a higher tensile strength.



The OnePly® paper complies with the european Ecolabel standard and it is manufactured under ISO 14001, with the lowest water consumption, 2.5 m3/t, and the lowest carbon footprint for tissue products.
